NEW LONDON, Conn. (Feb. 6, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team suffered a 25-6 road loss to arch-rival #18 Coast Guard on Wednesday night up in Connecticut. In defeat, the Mariners end their dual meet schedule with a 6-7 record, while the Bears improve to 5-3.
The teams split the first two bouts of the night, with USCGA claiming a 2-0 decision at 125, but senior Kimo Dial (Poway, Calif.) responded with a 7-2 decision at 133.
The next seven bouts all went in favor of Coast Guard, but only one was higher than a decision, as the Mariners competed very strongly against the Bears, especially against their nationally-ranked wrestlers at 165, 174 and 184.
Senior Blake Bunce (Trophy Club, Texas) claimed the Mariners' final three points at the heavyweight class with a 5-3 decision in a second sudden death period.
