KINGS POINT, N.Y. (July 2, 2019) – Recent USMMA graduate Hannah Gizzi '19 (Finksburg, Md.) finished the 2019 season as the NCAA Division III Statistical Champion with a 5.60 goals against average, leading all players in the country in the category. She becomes the first Mariner in program history to end a season as a national statistical champ.
Gizzi, the Academy's Julie Berke Trophy recipient as top female first-class student-athlete, was also named to two All-Region teams in 2019 – First Team All-ECAC and Second Team All-IWLCA Boardwalk Region – and was selected as the Skyline Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Skyline First Team. She was a four-time First Team All-Conference Goalie throughout her career.
In addition to leading the nation with a 5.60 GAA, Gizzi also ranked 12th in the country with a .536 save percentage. She backstopped the Mariner defense that ranked in the top-25 in the nation in three defensive categories: third in scoring defense (allowing just 5.39 goals per game), fourth in scoring margin (11.33 goals per game better than their opponents) and 12th with a .538 team save percentage.
As a team, the Mariners also ranked second among all Division III schools with a .944 win percentage, sixth with just 13.94 turnovers per game, 13th in scoring offense with 16.72 goals per game, 28th with having their players accumulate 22.78 points per game and 32nd with a .487 shot percentage.
Gizzi and the rest of the Mariners enjoyed the best season in program history in 2019, as the squad finished the regular season with an undefeated 15-0 record before winning both Skyline Tournament games in early May to earn their second-straight Skyline Championship, booking their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive year.
