Mariners Defeat Farmingdale State, 16-7, On The Road On Saturday

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 7, 2018) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team traveled out to reigning Skyline Conference champion Farmingdale State on Saturday for the two teams' conference-opener and came out on top of the Rams by the final score of 16-7. In victory, the Mariners improve to 6-2 (1-0 Skyline), while FSC falls to 1-7 (0-1 Skyline). 

Junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) recorded a double-digit point game for the third time this season, as she had 10 today on seven goals and three assists. Classmate Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) contributed seven points on six goals and one assist, while fellow junior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) added two tallies and one helper. 

Freshman Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) rounded out Merchant Marine goal-scorers when she found the back of the net late in the second half. Junior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) dished out one assist in the game.

Gizzi also had a great game defensively for the Mariners, as she made nine saves and led all players in the game with five caused turnovers, while also tying for the team-high with four groundballs. As a team, the Mariners caused a total of 13 Farmingdale turnovers – as Malone, senior Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.), junior Catherine Livi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and sophomore Cristina Biendicho (Panama City, Panama) all had two CTs apiece. 

Malone matched Gizzi's team-high with four GBs and also scooped up two draw controls, while Reilly led the Mariners with four DCs, while also picking up three groundballs. 

For the Rams, senior Samantha Morra and sophomore Courtney Gendels both had a pair of goals and three other players also found the twine. Freshman Julia Tuohy led the Rams with two assists on the day. Senior goalie Jessica Meyers made 10 saves in the losing effort, freshman Danielle Hall had a game-high five draw controls and classmate Haley Perez led all players in the game with seven groundballs. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to the Bronx, N.Y., on Tuesday, April 10, for a Skyline showdown against the College of Mount St. Vincent. Opening draw is slated for 4:30 p.m. at the Dolphins' Athletic Field at Marillac.
