MAHWAH, N.J. (March 27, 2018) – The USMMA women's lacrosse team traveled to northern New Jersey on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference contest against Ramapo College and left the Roadrunners' Athletic Center Turf with a narrow 9-8 victory. The Mariners' record moves to 4-2 on the season, while Ramapo falls to 2-3.
Junior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) recorded a hat-trick as she led all players in the game with three goals, while classmate Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) and freshman Kelly Midas (Clarksville, Md.) both had two goals apiece.
Also finding the back of the net for Merchant Marine were senior Rebecca Bessler (Kent, Wash.) and junior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.). Sophomore Elena Chamberland (Lakeland, Fla.) contributed to the offense by tying the game-high with two assists.
Reilly gathered a game-best eight draw controls and led the Mariners with four caused turnovers, while Midas picked up a team-best four groundballs. Reilly and sophomore defender Chelsea Chamberlain (South Setauket, N.Y.) both had two GBs apiece.
In goal, junior Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) made five saves and came up huge in the closing minutes of the game to record the victory.
The two teams traded goals for the entire first half, with USMMA scoring first and Ramapo answering. This happened four times before the teams went into the halftime break tied at 4-4. The Mariners got goals by Malone, Reilly, Willard (assisted by Chamberland) and Bessler in the opening half and Gizzi made one save.
After Midas scored the first goal of the second half, the Roadrunners answered with three straight – taking a 7-5 lead at the 23:48 mark. Over the next 14 minutes, Merchant Marine went on to score four goals and take a 9-7 lead with 8:12 left in regulation. Willard (assisted by Chamberland again), Midas, Willard again and Malone strung together the four tallies.
Ramapo made it a one-goal game with exactly six minutes to play and tried desperately to find the equalizer in the closing minutes. They fired off four shots, three of which (all in the final 1:33) were on goal and stopped by Gizzi, including a free position shot, as the junior netminder secured the victory for the Mariners.
For the Roadrunners, senior Colleen Manley and freshman Shannon Eagan both scored twice, while four other players added a goal apiece. Manley (2G, 1A) and sophomore Nicole Jaskot (1G, 2A) both tied Willard with a game-high three points on the night. Senior goalie Monica Bubello made 16 saves in the losing effort.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, March 31, when they play host to Medaille College in the final non-conference game of the season. Opening draw is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
