Mariners Sail To Victory Over Sarah Lawrence, 71-36

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2019) – With contributions from everyone on the roster, the USMMA women's basketball team cruised to a 71-36 home victory over Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence Wednesday evening at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners move to 14-1 (10-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Gryphons fall to 1-18 (0-13 Skyline). 

All 11 USMMA players recorded scored for Merchant Marine on the evening. Freshman Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) led the pack with a team-best 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) swatted a team-high four blocks and scored six points.  D'Arcy and classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) both registered a team-best three steals. Hightower also had four points and five boards in the contest, while fellow junior Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had six points. 

Sophomore Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) dished out a team-high five assists and knocked down a team-best two three-pointers, recording a total of eight points and seven rebounds. Classmate Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) had a career-high nine points, and fellow sophomore Alina Montenegro (West Palm Beach, Fla.) added four. 

Freshman Kimberly Palace (Grasonville, Md.) and Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) notched six points apiece, while classmates Julia Dahlke (San Diego, Calif.) and Allison Schieffer (Elbert, Colo.) contributed four and three points, respectively. 

The Mariners forced 28 turnovers on evening, and outscored the Gryphons in the paint 42-14. 

USMMA jumped out to 10-point lead in the first five minutes of the game, building a 23-4 advantage to finish the first quarter. The Mariners opened up a 30-point margin, 34-4, on a three-pointer by Vega at 6:29 of the second quarter. The Gryphons would outscore the Mariners 18-12 down the stretch to get the deficit down to 46-22 at halftime. 

The Mariners went up by as many as 31 points in the third, holding a 56-31 lead after three. USMMA outscored Sarah Lawrence, 15-5, in the final quarter to take the 71-36 victory. 

Freshman Camryn Davis led the Gryphons with 17 points in the contest. Davis and sophomore Melanie Coleman both brought down a team-high 11 rebounds each. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Westchester County this Saturday, Jan. 26, for a road Skyline matchup against Purchase College beginning at 12-noon. Live stats for the game will be available at this link
