USMMA Gets Ready to Face Division-I Army

Setting the Scene... The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (4-3) will take on the Black Knights of the United States Military Academy (8-3) Thursday night at 7:00 PM in West Point, NY.  Merchant Marine is coming off a pair of tough conference road losses to unbeaten Moravian College and the University of Scranton, while Army has also lost two in a row; falling to Rider and Loyola (MD) in their previous two contests. The Mariners face off against the Black Knights for the first time since the 2007-08 season.  

Series History...
USMMA is 0-2 all-time against their Division-I service academy foes.  In their last meeting, the Black Knights won convincingly by a final score of 90-38.

Scouting the Black Knights... Army enters Thursday night's contest with an 8-3 overall record.  The Black Knights have three players averaging double figures on the season with senior guard Anna Simmers, sophomore forward Olivia Schretzman, and junior guard/forward Jen Hazlett averaging 14.2, 11.0, and 10.4 points per game respectively.  On the defensive side of the ball, freshman forward/center Aimee Oertner has been dominant with 32 blocks and 12 steals.

Back on Track...
Sophomore guard Demi VanDerWal, who was a standout last season, leading the Mariners in scoring as a freshman, had her first double figure game of the season Sunday against Scranton.  She came off the bench to play 27 minutes, score a team-high 15 points, hit 3-6 from three point range and 6-8 from the foul line.
Geographically Diverse... USMMA sports an 11 player roster with each member hailing from a different state.  This makes USMMA the only team in NCAA Division-III basketball without having players from duplicate home states.  States Represented: (AZ, CO, CT, IA, IL, MS, NJ, NY, OR, PA, VA) 
Chasing 300/Academy Ties... Head Coach Matt Dempsey enters the game 2 wins away from the 300 plateau in his NCAA head coaching career.  Since 1986, he's recorded 38 wins as the head women's basketball coach at Green Mountain College, 216 wins as the as the head men's basketball coach at Green Mountain College, and 44 wins as the head women's basketball coach at the Merchant Marine Academy; compiling a career record of 298-254.  Additionally, before coaching at USMMA, he was the number one assistant women's basketball coach at the United States Naval Academy from 2003-2008.
