KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 2, 2018) – The USMMA men's swimming & diving team began the 2018 portion of their schedule with a loss to Division I Villanova University, 136.5-100.5 on Tuesday at the O'Hara Hall Pool. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 3-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 1-6.
Sophomore Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) had the Mariner swimmers' only victory of the night with a season-best time of 59.13 in the 100 breaststroke – beating out Villanova's Tyler Nussbaum by just two-hundredths of a second (59.15). He also had an impressive time in the 200 individual medley, coming in second place in 1:59.68.
On the boards, the Mariners had three divers compete and freshman Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) won both one-meter dive events with scores of 183.90 in the five dives and 288.15 in the six dives. His combined score of 472.05 once again was an NCAA qualifying mark for now the third time this season.
Picking up season-best times on the night were the following Merchant Marine swimmers:
- Sophomore Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) who shaved off three seconds in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.92 and one second in the 200 free in 1:52.25
- Junior Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.) in the 200 individual medley, besting his previous mark by four seconds with a 2:04.14 and also shaving off one second in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 54.89
- Freshman John Cairns (Durham, N.C.) in the 1000 free, who took of 12 seconds from his season best with a time of 10:11.01
- Junior Nick Fox (Clive, Iowa) in the 1000 free (10:50.24)
Up next, the Mariners will host Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's of Brooklyn next Wednesday, Jan. 10. First event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the O'Hara Hall Pool.
