KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2019) – The USMMA men's soccer team lost at home on Wednesday night to visiting #4/2 Amherst College by the final score of 5-0. The defeat drops the Mariners to .500, as they move to 3-3 on the season, while the Mammoths remain undefeated and improve to 5-0.
Amherst wasted little time getting on the board, as they scored in the eighth and ninth minutes on tallies by senior Dane Lind and sophomore German Giammattei. Giammattei scored once more before the half ended, in the 30th minute, and the Mammoths took that 3-0 lead into the break.
Despite being outshot 13-4 in the opening half, the Mariners actually had three shots on goal, but Amherst's sophomore keeper Bernie White turned all three aside. Merchant Marine senior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) was tested with six shots on goal in the opening 45 and he made three saves.
Giammattei recorded a hat trick to open the scoring in the second half with a 47th minute goal. Lind added his second off a feed from freshman Declan Sung in the 71st minute to close out the scoring.
Milner ended the night with nine saves and the Mariner defense had to also make a couple of stops, as junior Luke Sturtz (Norman, Okla.), senior Shane Swisher (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Daniel Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) all recorded defensive saves in the second half.
Amherst finished with a 29-6 shot advantage on the night.
Up next, the Mariners will open Skyline Conference action this Saturday, Sept. 21, with a home game against Sarah Lawrence College as part of Homecoming Weekend 2019. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed for that game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
