The Bears had the first attempt of the game in the third minute, but a shot from junior Daniel Taglianetti was turned away by senior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.). The Mariners proceeded to successfully defend three-consecutive corner kick attempts before senior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) pushed a header wide in front of the net in the eighth minute as the game remained scoreless.
After USMMA was unable to capitalize on its first corner kick in the 15th minute, Coast Guard took the lead in the 17th minute as a tackle in the box gave the Bears a penalty kick. Sophomore Mike Daunt slotted home the PK attempt to put the Bears up 1-0.
Milner stopped a header from senior Pryor Miller in the 31st minute and the game remained 1-0 at halftime.
The USMMA offense found more of a rhythm in the second half, accumulating 10 shots after totaling just two in the opening 45 minutes of action. The Mariners had their first attempt just 20 seconds into the half, but senior Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) sent a shot wide.
Coast Guard, however, doubled its lead in the 53rd minute. Daunt started the play with a lead pass down the middle of the field that found junior Seth Anderson streaking towards goal. As Milner came out to cut down the angle, Anderson fired low to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage.
Roros tried to get the goal right back for the Mariners immediately after the restart, but had his effort saved by Coast Guard senior Dakota Harich in the 54th minute. USMMA added a pair of shots by sophomores in the 56th minute as a blocked effort from David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) set up a Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) rebound attempt that sailed high.
The Bears took advantage of a free kick to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute as senior Brock Hassett sent a ball to sophomore Robbie Fugett, who one-timed a shot from just outside the six-yard box.
The USMMA offense once again worked quickly after the restart as Kelly had a shot saved in the 58th minute. A corner kick led to the next attempt for the Mariners in the 61st minute, but senior Patrick McLaughlin (Allentown, Pa.) pushed a header wide of the right post.
Milner stopped one more Coast Guard shot in the 87th minute to finish the game with three saves.
The Mariners return to action and continue a three-game homestand on Wednesday, Sept 18, with a 7:45 p.m. contest against No. 6/2 Amherst. Live stats and a live video feed for that game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
