NEW LONDON, Conn. (Sept. 8, 2018) - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team lost on the road to arch-rival Coast Guard, 1-0, on Saturday up at the Bears' Nitchman Field. The loss drops the Mariners to 2-1 on the season, while USCGA improves to 1-1-2.
After a scoreless first half, Coast Guard looked to take the lead in the 63rd minute on a rebound shot after a save by junior Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.). The Bears were called offside, however, negating the goal and keeping the game scoreless.
Just over ten minutes later, Coast Guard found the back of the net after a corner kick resulted in a quick shot being blocked by a Mariner defender, before freshman Robbie Fugett jumped on the rebound and one-timed it in for what proved to be the game-winner.
Total shots edged slightly in favor of Merchant Marine, 10-9, but the Bears had four shots on goal to the Mariners' one. Milner ended the day with three saves.
The Mariners are back in action this Wednesday, Sept. 12, when they play host to Centenary College beginning at 7:45 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
