Men's Lacrosse Advances To Skyline Finals With 21-8 Home Win Over Farmingdale State

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 1, 2019) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Farmingdale State, 21-8, on Wednesday night in the Skyline Conference Semifinals at Brooks Stadium. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 11-4 and will move on to the Skyline Finals for the second straight season, where they will look to defend their conference title against top-seed SUNY Maritime on Saturday. The Rams end the season 11-6. 

Five Mariners had multi-goal nights, with senior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) leading all players with a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Renard also tied a team-best with two caused turnovers. Classmate Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) buried two goals and added a helper to go along with two caused turnovers. Fellow classmates Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) scored once and Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.) dished out an assist. 

Juniors Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) both twinkled the twine four times on the night. Fellow junior Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) put away three goals on the evening. Sophomore John Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) and freshman Jack Browne (Summit, N.J.) both registered a goal apiece, while classmates Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Ben Mathews (Chesapeake, Va.) both pitched in with an assist. 

In the faceoff-X, senior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won 15-of-27 faceoffs and scooped up seven groundballs, tying a team-high. Defensively, sophomore Zach Venanzi (Jupiter, Fla.) caused two turnovers. 

In goal, junior Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) earned the victory with nine stops in 55 minutes of action. Sophomore Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) made one stop in nearly five minutes of relief. 

Farmingdale State got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first two goals before building its lead to 3-1 at 10:34 of the opening quarter. After USMMA got within one, 3-2, at the 7:49 mark, the Rams scored two of the final three goals of the first quarter to lead 5-3 after one. 

Merchant Marine scored four of the next five goals in the second stanza and struck three straight times down the stretch to take a 7-6 advantage into halftime. 

The Mariners held the Rams to just one tally again in the third quarter, and found the back of the cage eight times to extend their advantage to 15-7. The final quarter followed a similar script, with USMMA racking up six of the final seven goals to cruise to the 21-8 decision. 

Junior AJ Sandorfi posted a team-best two goals and classmates Dylan Fitzgerald and Jake Satterly both netted a goal apiece. Senior James Ragland also recorded a goal on the night, while fellow underclassmen Dan Wood suffered the loss in goal despite making 13 saves in 45 minutes. Fellow cohort Greg Palma relieved him and stopped seven shots in seven minutes and sophomore Mike Nicosia came in to finished the final eight minutes.
