KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 24, 2019) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 21-8, on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 9-4 (4-1 Skyline), while the Knights fall to 5-10 (2-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Prior to the start of the game, the Mariners held a special recognition and moment of silence for former Mariner Teague Murphy '02, who passed away suddenly earlier this year. Teague was a goalie and team captain for Merchant Marine and helped lead them to four ECAC Tournaments in his All-Knickerbocker Conference career.
At halftime of the game, the USMMA men's lacrosse program paid tribute to its seven graduating seniors of the Class of 2019 with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.), Teddy Finley (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Jeb Brown (Westport, Mass.), Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.), Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.), Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.), and Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.).
Junior Liam Connors (Bellemore, N.Y.) led the way with seven points on three goals and four assists, while Renard tallied six points on five goals and one helper. Junior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) and Kane both recorded five points, as Morsberger scored three times to go along with two assists and Kane had two tallied and three helpers, while junior John Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) added four points on a goal and three assists.
Four other Mariners found the back of the net on the night, as Rodriguez tallied a hat-trick, junior Nick Maurer (Longmeadow, Mass.) had two goals and classmate Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) and freshman Matt Groom (Bethpage, N.Y.) both scored once. Sophomore Michael Carbone (Hamilton, N.J.) chipped in with an assist on Groom's goal in the fourth quarter.
Hughes won 20-of-24 faceoffs and led all players with 10 groundballs on the night, while sophomore Tristan Kelehan (Elkridge, Md.) and junior goalie Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) both had six GBs. Tilley earned the victory after playing the first half and making five saves. Sophomore Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) came in in relief in the second half and made four saves. Defensively, sophomore Zach Venanzi (Jupiter, Fla.) and Connors both had two caused turnovers each.
For the Knights, junoir Michael Gallucci tallied a team-best three points on two goal and an assists, while sophomore Vinny Vaccaro also found the back of the net twice. Senior Peter Beidel gobbled up a team-high five groundballs and sophomore Matthew Martino caused a game-high three turnovers. In goal, junior Eli Laikin made 13 saves in just over 40 minutes of action, while freshman Devin Kelley finished out the final 20 minutes and made one stop.
Up next, the Mariners will play its regular season-finale this Saturday, April 27, up at Skyline opponent Purchase College. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12-noon. Any live coverage of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
