Mariners Lose Hagedorn Cup At Rival SUNY Maritime, 19-9

BRONX, N.Y. (April 10, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team suffered a tough setback on the road at Skyline rival SUNY Maritime, 19-9, at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. With the loss, the Mariners fall to 7-4 (2-1 Skyline), while Maritime improves to 9-3 (3-0 Skyline) in victory. 

The Privateers held a 5-2 lead after a close first quarter, but they scored the first four goals of the second to take a commanding 9-2 advantage. USMMA tried to climb out of the hole with three-straight tallies, but getting back to just a four-goal deficit before halftime, 9-5, was the closest the Mariners would come the rest of the night. SUNY Maritime took complete control after outscoring Merchant Marine 5-1 in the third quarter. 

Junior Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.), classmate Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) and senior Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) all recorded three points for the Mariners, as Roros had a hat trick, while Connors and Kane both scored once and dished out two assists apiece. Senior Michael Rodriguez (Northport, N.Y.) tallied two goals and two other players found the back of the net – senior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) and junior John Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.)

In goal, sophomore Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) made 10 saves in the losing effort. Junior Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) won nine faceoffs and picked up a team-best five groundballs. Classmate Adam Behrndt (Glenmoore, Pa.) tied for the game-high with three groundballs. Senior defender Teddy Finley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scooped up four GBs, while freshman Jason Aiello (Northport, N.Y.) secured three. 

For the Privateers, sophomore Mike Leake led all players with seven points on four goals and three assists, while classmate Matt DeMeo had a six-point night with five goals and one assist. Senior Brett Trodden contributed with a goal and a game-high four helpers. Senior goalie Justin Weigold made 11 saves over the 60 minutes to record the victory. In the faceoff-X, sophomore Kevin Buser won 19-of-31 draws and picked up a game-high nine groundballs. Junior Mark Buchner matched the game-high with three caused turnovers. 

The Mariners will look to bounce back next Monday, April 15, with a non-conference home game against Montclair State beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page
