Treon Becomes MLAX All-Time Points Leader As Mariners Down Purchase On

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 28, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Purchase College, 25-8, on Saturday in the regular season finale. In victory, the Mariners improve to 10-2 (6-0 Skyline), while the Panthers end the year 5-9 (1-5 Skyline). 

Prior to the game, the Mariners paid tribute to its seven graduating seniors of the Class of 2018 - Ryan Sweeney (San Diego, Calif.), Max Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.), Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas), Chris Giordano (Warwick, N.Y.), Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.). With his third point of the day on a goal at the 7:14 mark of the first, Treon became the USMMA men's lax program's all-time leader in points scored. He finished the game with six points on four goals and two assists to bring his career total to 258. Junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) led the Mariners with 10 points on a goal and nine assists, all of them coming in the first quarter. 

A total of 14 different players scored a point for USMMA on the day. Coll added four goals, while freshman Tristian Kellehan (Elkridge, Md.) added his first career hat-trick. Fellow freshman Nick Alberici (Auburn, N.Y.) added six points on two goals and four assists and junior Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) and sophomore Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) and Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.) all had three-point games – Rodriguez and Morsberger with two goals and an assist each and Misner with one tally and one helper. 

Junior Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.) and sophomore Nick Maurer (Longmeadow, Mass.) both scored twice and freshman MacLean Keene-Connole (Middletown, R.I.) dished out two assists and three other Mariners had one point each – Mullins and Dodson with goals and junior Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) with an assist. 

Merchant Marine split face-off duties on the day, with freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) winning 10-of-12 and picking up a game-high eight groundballs, while junior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won 12-of-15 and freshman Michael Zurlo (Millersville, Md.) had two wins in the X. 

In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) got the start and played the first quarter, making one save. The victory went to classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.), who played the final 45 minutes and had five saves. 

For Purchase, junior Dylan Gethicker scored a game-high five goals. Classmate James Felix and freshman Christian Maldonado both had three points each – Felix scoring twice and adding an assist and Maldonado with a goal and one helper. In goal, sophomore Matt Sayegh made four saves in the first half, suffering the loss. In the second half, classmate Eamon McGee had one save. 

Up next, the #1 seed Mariners will host the Skyline Semifinals on Wednesday night, May 2, at Brooks Stadium against the #4 seed Farmingdale State Rams.
