MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 11, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team lost its first game of the 2018 campaign on Wednesday night, 13-12, on the road at former Skyline Conference opponent (and last year's Skyline Champions), Montclair State. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 9-1, while the Red Hawks improve to 5-4.
USMMA scored three of the first four goals of the game and held a 3-2 lead after the first quarter ended. Montclair went on to outscore the Mariners, 5-3 in the second, including a tally with just one second remaining and the hosts took a 7-6 lead into the halftime break.
After the Red Hawks scored the first two goals of the third quarter to expand their lead to 9-6, Merchant Marine responded with four of the next five tallies and tied the game up at 10-10 with 4:12 to play in the frame. The two teams traded last-minute goals and the score was tied 11-11 after three.
The Mariners scored their only man-up goal of the game in the opening minute of the fourth, however that was all they were able to score in the final stanza, as Montclair's goalie made five saves in the quarter and the Red Hawks scored twice more to claim the narrow victory.
Junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) scored a game-high four times and tied for the game-high of four points. Three other Mariners had three points each, as sophomore Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) recorded a hat-trick, senior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y/) added two goals and an assist and classmate Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) dished out three helpers.
Senior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) found the back of the net twice and sophomore Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) contributed one goal to round out the USMMA scorers on the night. Freshman face-off man Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) won 20-of-24 draws and picked up a game-high 12 groundballs.
In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) made four saves over the 60 minutes, as he suffered the first loss of his career.
Montclair was led by junior Matt Haemmerle, who tallied four points on two goals and two assists. Both junior Dan Bellezza and sophomore Skyler Francisco contributed two goals and one assists each. Freshman defender Joseph DiAntonio led the Red Hawks with five groundballs and also tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers.
Freshman goalie Matthew McLaren earned the victory after making 15 saves over the four quarters, including six in the first and five in the fourth.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, April 14, for their annual rivalry game with Coast Guard. This year's game will be played up at the U.S. Military Academy (Army) in West Point, N.Y. Opening face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Army's Shea Stadium. More information for the game can be found at this link.
