KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 31, 2018) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Mitchell College, 23-3, on Saturday afternoon at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners remain undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record, while the Mitchell Mariners fall to 0-7 in defeat.
A total of 17 different players recorded points for the Mariners, including 15 different goal scorers. The three-headed monster on attack of seniors Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) along with junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) all had a game-high six points apiece. Coll had three goals and three assists and both Treon and Renard tallied two goals and four helpers.
Sophomore Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.) added four points on two goals and two assists, classmate Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) contributed three points (1G, 2A) and two other Mariners had two goals each – sophomore Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) and freshman Tristan Kelehan (Elkridge, Md.).
Also finding the back of the net for the Mariners were the following players – junior Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.), sophomore Stephen Powers (Tucson, Ariz.), sophomore Ian McClintock (St. Augustine, Fla.) with his first career tally, sophomore Nick Maurer (Longmeadow, Mass.), senior Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas), freshman MacLean Keene-Connole (Middletown, R.I.), sophomore John Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.), junior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) and freshmen Michael Carbone (Hamilton, N.J.).
All three face-off men for USMMA had great games, as freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) and freshman Michael Zurlo (Millersville, Md.) were both a perfect 10-for-10, while sophomore Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won 8-of-9. Buser led all players with 10 groundballs and Zurlo picked up six GBs. Buser also dished out an assist for the Mariners.
In goal, freshman Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) made three saves to record his first career victory. Byrne also collected five groundballs in the game. Defensively, Coll led the Mariners with two caused turnovers, while junior Teddy Finley (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Zach Venanzi (Jupiter, Fla.) both had one CT apiece.
For Mitchell, junior Kyle Marsh had a team-best three points on two goals and an assist. Freshman Jade Shields tallied the other goal for the Mariners. Freshman goalie Marcel Quinlan made 11 saves in the losing effort. Freshman Jesse McKeever led all players in the game with three caused turnovers and also picked up a team-best four groundballs.
The Mariners return to action next Saturday, April 7, when they host Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State. Opening face-off against the Rams is slated for 12-noon at Brooks Stadium.
