MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 11, 2016) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team topped Emmanuel College, 16-11, on Friday afternoon in its final day of action of its Spring Break trip down in South Carolina. With the victory, the Mariners move to 2-1 on the season, while the Saints fall to 1-4.
Sophomores Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) had great afternoons for Merchant Marine, as Coll recorded six points with five goals and an assist, while Treon added five points on a goal and four assists.
Six other Mariners registered multi-point games – freshmen Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) and Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) both had two goals and an assist, sophomore Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) scored twice and classmates Ryan Sweeney (San Diego, Calif.) and Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) and freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) all had a goal and assist.
Freshman Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) was 19-for-28 on faceoffs with a game-high seven groundballs, while Mullins picked up six GBs with one caused turnovers. Sophomore Elijah Cherry (Houston, Texaxs) led the USMMA defense by causing two turnovers.
In goal, senior Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) earned the win with eight saves.
The Saints got on the board first with a goal at 12:45 of the opening quarter, but Merchant Marine responded with back-to-back tallies by Coll (assisted by Treon) and Kane. After Emmanuel cut their deficit in half, the Mariners scored the next three goals of the first as two by Coll (both assisted by Treon) sandwiched a man-up goal by Jack Renard, assisted by Coll.
Emmanuel fought back to tie the score at 5-5 with the first three goals of the second quarter, but USMMA scored four of the next five goals to take a 9-6 lead into the halftime break as Dodson, freshman Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.), Sweeney and Coll all found the back of the net.
The Saints came out strong to start the second half, tallying back-to-back scores to come within one, 9-8. Mullins, Rodriguez and Renard strung three goals together to give the Mariners a cushion. Even though Emmanuel scored three of the next four goals to make it a two-goal game at 13-11 with 6:46 remaining, Merchant Marine tallied the last three scores of the game, as Kane, Treon and Dodson ended the scoring.
Emmanuel was led by senior Chris Curtis, who scored three goals and dished out one assist. Classmate Michael Donovan also had a hat trick, and sophomore Charlie Moran added two goals and an assist. Freshman goalie Cole Scadden suffered the loss despite making eight saves.
