SELINSGROVE, Pa. (March 28, 2015) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team lost a Landmark Conference contest on the road on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Crusaders of Susquehanna University, 9-4, at SU's Sassafras Field. Senior Geoff Harty (Chicago, Ill.) scored a team-high two goals for Merchant Marine and freshman Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) recorded one goal and one assist. Senior Troy Smith (Deer Park, Texas) also found the back of the net for the Mariners.

In goal, senior Alex Peyreigne (Weston, Conn.) made 11 saves. Sophomore Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) was 9-for-15 in faceoffs and matched the game-high with five groundballs. Three separate Mariners recorded one caused turnover apiece – senior Kyle Sammis (Dix Hills, N.Y.), junior Ethan Medler (Kingwood, Texas) and freshman Elijah Cherry (Houston, Texas).

Smith scored the first goal of the game at 10:10 of the opening quarter. The Crusaders responded with a goal late in the first when junior Adam Fox found the twine off a pass by classmate Kade MacGregor. Susquehanna had the only goal of the second quarter, an unassisted tally by senior Phil Lapone and the Crusaders led 2-1 at the half.

Harty opened the scoring in the second half off a feed by Treon to tie the score at 2-2, but back-to-back goals by freshman Alec Tzaneteas (both assisted by junior Nick Reardon) put the hosts back ahead, 4-2. Harty found the back of the net for his second of the day at 4:19 of the third to bring the Mariners back within one. Senior Carmen Raroha scored with just over a minute left in the quarter to make it 5-3, Susquehanna.

Treon scored just over a minute into the fourth quarter to pull USMMA within one once again, but the Crusaders went on to finish strong, tallying the next four goals, including two in the final minute, to claim the victory.

Susquehanna was led by Tzaneteas, who recorded a hat trick with three goals. Junior Greg Budd scored two fourth-quarter goals. Senior goalie Jared Knowlton stopped nine Merchant Marine shots in nearly 60 minutes to pick up the victory.

The Mariners are back at it this Tuesday night, March 31, when they play host to non-conference opponent Western Connecticut State. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
