KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 8, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball defeated visiting Skyline Conference opponent Old Westbury, 58-55, at home on Tuesday in the first game of the New Year. With the win, the Mariners' second straight, Merchant Marine improves to 3-7 (1-5 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers fall to 6-6 (4-3 Skyline) in defeat.

Three players scored in double-digits for the Mariners, with sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) leading the way with 14 off the bench. Junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added 12 and sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) contributed 10.

The Mariners led by 10 points with five minutes to play, 53-43, however the Panthers exploded for a 12-1 run to take a one-point lead, 55-54, after a three-pointer at 2:29. The Mariners answered right back with a layup by Green that made it 56-55 in favor of the hosts with just two minutes left.

The two teams combined to miss seven baskets in the final two minutes, as the Panthers shot 0-for-5, fouling late twice, as Green extended the lead to 58-55 with a pair of free-throws with 18 seconds left.

Old Westbury called timeout with seven seconds play, but the inbound pass went right through a Panthers' legs and Green wound up with it again and was fouled with just five seconds left.
