Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team returns home Wednesday night to take on Potsdam St. after a five game road trip. USMMA has won two of its last three outings, both in overtime, against Coast Guard and Landmark Conference rival Scranton. The Bears are currently on a six game losing streak after winning their season opener.
Series History... Potsdam St. won the only meeting in history between the two programs in the 1989 NCAA Tournament. The Bears earned the 80-68 triumph in the Mariners first-ever trip to the big dance.
Mariners Thrive in Overtime... Merchant Marine had two-point leads at the end of regulation and the first overtime before finally defeating Coast Guard, 78-76, in double overtime. USMMA then overcome a six-point deficit in the final 43 seconds against Scranton en route to downing the Royals, 86-83.
"Hatz" Off... Sophomore George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, NY) had his strongest three games of the season last week as he returns to form after spending time at sea. The guard has recorded three straight games of double-digit points, including 17 against Scranton. In that game, Hatzioannides posted four points in the final 43 seconds and assisted on the buzzer beater at the end of regulation.
Career High For Karczewski... Zach Karczewski (Austin, TX) exploded for a career best 27 points in the Mariners overtime victory over Scranton. The senior guard shot 10-of-14 from the field as well as a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown. On the year, Karczewski is averaging 12.1 points per game and is shooting 40 percent from three-point range.
Landmark Conference Notebook... Catholic, Goucher, and Juniata are the three remaining unbeaten teams in the league, all sitting at 1-0. Only Drew and Susquehanna are winless while the Mariners are the only team to have played more than two games.
Scouting the Bears... Potsdam St. is 0-5 on the road this year having lost each game by an average of over 15 points. Rob Duquette leads the Bears with 13. 6 points per game while also averaging 10.0 rebounds per game. Potsdam St. has also struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 22.7 percent from three-point range.
Up Next... USMMA will not return to action until after the New Year, taking on Kenyon and Clarkson on January 3-4.
