Jameson Croall enters his fifth season as Head Football Coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 2026-27 and his 15th year overall at Kings Point, where he has established one of Division III football's premier leadership-based programs. Since assuming the role in 2022, Croall has guided the Mariners with a philosophy rooted in three principles—Purpose. Pursuit. Progress.—believing that extraordinary football teams are built by developing extraordinary leaders.
For Croall, football is more than a game. At a federal service academy, every practice, meeting, and workout serves a greater mission: preparing future officers who can lead under pressure, solve complex problems, and place the success of their team above themselves. The scoreboard matters, but the lasting measure of the program is the quality of the leaders who graduate from Kings Point.
That philosophy has translated into sustained success on and off the field.
In four seasons as head coach, the Mariners have continued one of the most successful stretches in Academy history. Merchant Marine opened Croall's tenure with consecutive winning seasons in 2022 and 2023, earning an ECAC James Lynah Bowl appearance, before authoring one of the most memorable campaigns in recent program history during the 2025 season. The year was highlighted by a thrilling 39-38 victory over archrival Coast Guard in the 45th Secretaries' Cup, played before a national audience at historic Fenway Park—the first time one of college football's oldest service academy rivalries was contested at the iconic venue. The victory not only secured one of the most dramatic wins in series history, but also reflected the resilience, composure, and competitive toughness that have become hallmarks of Croall's program.
Under Croall's leadership, Merchant Marine has produced All-Conference, All-Region, and national award winners while maintaining one of the strongest academic cultures in Division III football. His players have earned NEWMAC major awards, All-Region recognition, CSC Academic All-District honors, and NEWMAC All-Academic Team selections, reinforcing his belief that excellence is never compartmentalized. The same habits that create successful football players create successful officers, engineers, executives, and leaders.
Central to Croall's philosophy is an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. The program's culture is built around the idea that championships are earned through disciplined daily habits rather than emotional highs. Players are challenged to relentlessly pursue growth, embrace accountability, and value the process over immediate results. Every lift, meeting, classroom session, and practice is viewed as an opportunity to build trust, discipline, and leadership.
Before becoming head coach, Croall spent ten seasons as Merchant Marine's Offensive Coordinator and Offensive Line Coach, helping engineer one of the nation's most productive offenses. His triple-option attack consistently ranked among the country's elite and culminated in the historic 2021 season, when the Mariners posted a 9-1 record—the winningest season in Academy history at the time—and finished among the national leaders in rushing offense, scoring offense, total offense, and situational efficiency.
Throughout his career, Croall has developed numerous All-Conference, All-Americans, and major award winners, including Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist Ian Blankenship, All-American offensive lineman Randy Ruple, and multiple conference Players and Rookies of the Year. Yet those closest to the program know that player development extends far beyond athletic accolades. Alumni leave Kings Point prepared not only for professional football opportunities but, more importantly, for careers leading ships, businesses, military units, and organizations around the world.
Croall's investment in the Academy extends well beyond football. He contributes across campus through curriculum leadership, self-defense instruction, and event operations, embracing the belief that coaching is an extension of education rather than a separate pursuit.
A graduate of Springfield College, where he played and later coached in the triple-option system, Croall also spent a season at Maine Maritime Academy before arriving at Kings Point in 2012. Those experiences shaped his coaching philosophy, but it has been at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy where he has found his calling.
Today, Croall continues to build a program measured by more than victories. Guided by Purpose. Pursuit. Progress., Merchant Marine Football seeks to develop competitors who serve something greater than themselves, leaders who elevate those around them, and graduates prepared to make an impact long after the final whistle.
