Baseball Sweeps Hiram On Monday To Move To 4-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 4, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team swept a doubleheader against Hiram College on Monday on the Mariners' second day of the Cusic Classic down in Florida. USMMA won the first game, 6-4, and then completed the sweep with an 11-2 victory in the second game. 

In game one, sophomore Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the way offensively, going 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Seniors Jesse Reinebold (Sagamihara, Japan) and Reilly Cherry (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) both knocked in runs as well for the Mariners, while classmate John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) earned the victory after hurling 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts, and fellow senior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) picked up his second save pitching the final out in the seventh.

Official stats for the second game are not available at this time, but according to the book, sophomore Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while junior Matt Austin (Rockledge, Fla.) knocked in three runs after going 2-for-3. 

Junior Ben Kane (Huntington Beach, Calif.) got the starting nod and pitched four innings to earn the victory.
