STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 18, 2018) – The USMMA baseball team lost a non-conference contest on the road at The College of Staten Island on Wednesday night by the final score of 2-1. The Dolphins won the game via a walk-off double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The Mariners' record drops to 23-8 in defeat, while CSI improves to 10-13.
The game was scoreless through six innings with the two teams only combining for seven hits – three for Merchant Marine and four for Staten Island. The Dolphins broke through in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to left center by sophomore John Pomarico that scored senior Glenn Glennerster.
The Mariners got even in the next half-inning on a single through the left side by junior Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) that brought freshman Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) in with the tying run. Winzer had two of USMMA's four hits on the night, as he finished the game 2-for-3.
In the ninth, CSI got the leadoff man on via a single by junior Nicholas Meola and then had back-to-back outs on a flyout and a strikeout, but Pomarico delivered his second RBI-double of the game that scored Meola all the way from first. Pomrico ended the night 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
On the mound, senior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) got the start and lasted seven innings, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts. He did not factor into the decision. The loss went to freshman Joaquin Munoz (Lubbock, Texas), who hurled 1.2 innings, giving up the one run on two hits with two Ks.
Senior Juan Rodriguez started for the Dolphins and tossed seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits and striking out five. Classmate Derek Jentz threw the eighth and gave up an unearned run on one hit with two Ks. Fellow senior Christian Capellan got the win after tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning and fanning one.
The Mariners are back in action this Sunday, April 22, when they host Skyline opponent Farmingdale State for a doubleheader beginning at 12-noon at Lower Roosevelt Field. Live stats for both games will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page later this week.
