PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (March 31, 2018) – The USMMA baseball team split its Skyline Conference doubleheader out at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday, winning the first game 7-4 before falling in the second by the score of 2-1. The Mariners' record moves to 17-3 (5-1 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles move to 8--9 (3-1 Skyline).

Freshman Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) hurled the complete game in the opener to secure his team-leading fifth victory of the season. In nine innings, he allowed four runs (just two earned) on five hits, while fanning 11.

At the plate, junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) was 2-for-5 with a team-best three RBIs, while freshman Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.) wend 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Freshman Jack McCann (Newark, Del.) and sophomore Wyatt Wilson (Chandler, Ariz.) had the other two RBIs for the Mariners.

Merchant Marine built up a 6-0 lead with a run in the fourth and the five more in the sixth before the Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Mariners added an insurance run in the top of the eighth and held on for the victory.

In game two, USMMA grabbed a 1-0 lead early after scoring the first run of the game in the top of the opening inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) that plated senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.)

St. Joe's tied the score up in the fourth and then earned the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth before closing the game out after the next half-inning. The Mariners only mustered three hits in the affair, two off the bat of Sithong, including a double, and one by Cunningham.

Despite pitching all six innings with great stuff, junior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) suffered the loss, his first of the season, as he moves to 4-1. He allowed two runs on six hits with 13 strikeouts.

The Mariners return to the diamond this Tuesday, April 3, when they play host to the College of New Rochelle in non-conference action beginning at 4 p.m. at Lower Roosevelt Field. Live stats will be available for both games with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page
