Mariners Hold Off Bearcats, 7-5, In Brooklyn On Tuesday

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (March 20, 2018) – The USMMA baseball team defeated non-conference opponent Baruch College, 7-5, on Tuesday afternoon at MCU Park in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The Mariners improve to 11-2 on the season with the victory, while the Bearcats fall to 3-11-1. 

Merchant Marine held a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth when Baruch threatened by loading the bases with one out. The Mariners were able to escape with limited damage for the victory, as the Bearcats scored just once. 

It was a back-and-forth affair early on with USMMA scoring first in the top of the second, before Baruch answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. The Mariners tacked on one more in the third and the two in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. They added another run in the sixth, but the Bearcats responded with one of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Both teams scored in the ninth – Merchant Marine twice in the top half before Baruch fell short with their one run in the bottom.

Senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) and junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) led the Mariners, as they both had two RBIs apiece. Sithong had Merchant Marine's lone extra-base hit with a triple. Three other players knocked in one run each for USMMA – junior Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.), freshman Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) and junior Reilly Cherry (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho). Seven different Mariners scored runs, including Sithong, Mowry, Alteri and Cherry. Sithong and Cherry added had stolen bases in the affair. 

On the mound, freshman Joaquin Munoz (Lubbock, Texas) earned his first collegiate victory, hurling 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Classmate Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) and junior John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) were effective in relief, with Kelly earning his second save of the season with 3.0 innings pitched and three strikeouts. 

For Baruch, junior Michael McGroarty led the way with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore starter Angel Acevedo suffered the loss after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits with four Ks.
