Trio Of Mariners Earn Weekly Honors; Wednesday’s Home-Opener Postponed

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 14, 2018) – The Skyline Conference announced on Monday evening that three U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball players have earned weekly recognitions, as freshman Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.) was selected as the Rookie of the Week, classmate Joe Raab (Edwardsburgf, Mich.) earned Pitcher of the Week Honors and junior Kyle Cunningham (Panama City Beach, Fla.) landed on the weekly honor roll. Additionally, on Tuesday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) chose Alteri as its Division III Metro Rookie of the Week.

The accolades come after the trio's performances for the Mariners during the past week down in Florida, where they went 4-2 over six games from Monday to Saturday.

Alteri was second on the team with a .474 batting average and led the Mariners with nine hits, a .632 slugging percentage (thanks to a double and a triple) and four stolen bases over the six games. He also knocked in four runs and, defensively, recorded 39 putouts and one assist.

Raab won his only start of the week when the Mariners bested Pitt.-Bradford on Friday afternoon. The rookie pitched seven scoreless innings against the Panthers, allowing six hits and striking out 12 batters. It was the rookie's second victory of the season.

Cunningham led Merchant Marine with six RBIs and also tied for the team-high with six runs and two doubles over the Mariners' six games. He also put on a dazzling display of defense throughout the week, as he recorded nine assists, some very impressive, and one putout.

On the national landscape, the Mariners have four players ranked in the top-30 in Division III in a statistical category. Rabb is third in the country with a 15.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while his 15.0 Ks per nine innings is good for 27th. Senior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) is 27th in the nation with two triples, junior Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) and freshman Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) are tied for 22nd with one complete game and Heck's zero walks allowed is tied for first.
