KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 30, 2016) – The USMMA baseball team lost both games of a home Landmark Conference doubleheader against Moravian on Saturday, as the Mariners were edged in the first game, 2-1, before falling in the second, 5-0. Merchant Marine falls to 11-23 (6-14 Landmark) on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 20-19 (13-7 Landmark) with the wins.
The first game was a pitchers' duel between junior Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, N.C.) and Moravian freshman Rhett Jacoby. There were only a combined nine hits between the two teams and a total of eight 1-2-3 innings. Moravian had two singles in the first inning, including an RBI hit by freshman Austin Markowski that opened the scoring in the game.
The Mariners led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle by junior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.). After freshman Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.) moved Thomson over to second on a sacrifice bunt, Thomson scored to tie the game on a pair of errors on the same play by the Greyhounds' second baseman that allowed sophomore Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) to reach.
The Greyhounds added another run in the top of the fifth after another multi-hit inning and Jacoby shut the last nine Mariner batters down in order over the next three innings to earn the victory. He improved his record to 7-2 on the season after hurling seven innings of two-hit ball, allowing an unearned run and striking out six.
Morgan suffered the loss, as he allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts over seven innings pitched. His record falls to 4-3 on the season. Freshman Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) had the Mariners' other hit, an infield single in the fourth.
In between the two games of the doubleheader, the Mariners held a special Senior Day ceremony for their four graduating seniors – Grant Foley (Butler, Pa.), Quinn Fleming (Ashburn, Va.), Jeff Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio) and Brad Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio). USMMA was limited to just three hits by Moravian's sophomore starter Ryan Kahn in the second game as he earned the complete game shutout to move to 3-3 thanks to nine strikeouts in the affair.
Mowry, Fleming and freshman Kai Vitella (Lewes, Del.) had the three Mariner hits. Freshman Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) suffered the loss despite tossing all seven innings. He allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out six Crusader batters.
The third game of the series is still scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, May 1, although weather forecasts for Kings Point call for rain all day.
