OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 28, 2015) – On Tuesday night, the USMMA baseball team played its final game of the 2015 season at local, non-conference opponent Old Westbury, and lost by the final score of 6-1. The Mariners end the year with a 13-19 record, while the Panthers improve to 22-8.
Junior pitcher Kyle Clausen (Southold, N.Y.) got the starting nod and was solid through seven innings, allowing just two runs. He pitched into the eighth and ended the night surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out six batters in 7.1 innings of work. Freshman Josh Ellington (San Leon, Texas) came in in relief and got the final two outs of the eighth, but not before allowing two runs (just one earned) on two hits with one K.
At the dish, freshman Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) was 3-for-3 with an RBI double to left in the first inning that opened the scoring on the night. Only one other Mariner had a hit, and that was senior Jake Wood (Richmond, Va.), who had a single earlier in the first and then scored all the way from first base on the Barnes double.
The Panthers tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth and then took a 2-1 lead in the next inning on an unearned run. They added insurance in the likes of four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Old Westbury used five pitchers in the victory, and the "W" went to freshman Vinny Bieniek, who tossed one inning of no-hit ball, striking out to Mariners. Sophomore Nick Dorcean earned the save after hurling the last two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five.
