KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 23, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost its home-finale to visiting St. Joseph's of Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon at Lower Roosevelt Field by the final score of 9-1. The Mariners' record drops to 12-16 overall, while the Bears improve to 14-15.
Freshman Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) was 3-for-4 for USMMA and scored the Mariners' only run of the day on the game's final play in the bottom of the ninth. Campbell was knocked in on a single to right field by classmate Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.), who was 1-for-4.
Freshman Kaleb Clayville (Pasadena, Md.) roped his first-career extra base hit with a double to center in the fifth, as he was 1-for-2 with a walk and sophomore Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) had Merchant Marine's other hit in the game – a single to left in the seventh.
On the mound, freshman Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) suffered the loss after hurling 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while also striking out two. Classmate Dylan Rabbitt (Easton, Md.) finished the fifth and struck out one batter, while junior Kyle Clausen (Southold, N.Y.) pitched the sixth and allowed one hit while striking out one. Juniors Jeff Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio) and Brad Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio) pitched scoreless innings in the seventh and ninth, respectively. Jeff struck out one batter.
For St. Joseph's, senior Domenick Camerada was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while classmate Chris Cutrone went 2-for-4 and also knocked in three runs. Sophomore Michael Camerada had two RBIs after going 2-for-4 and senior Vinny Rossi contributed one RBI on a 2-for-4 performance. Junior Brian Luebcke and sophomore Francis Rapp both scored two runs apiece for the Bears.
Sophomore Mitch Brigando tossed a complete game for St. Joe's and allowed one run on six hits with two strikeouts, earning his sixth victory of the season.
The Mariners will now travel to Bethlehem, Pa., this weekend for the final Landmark Conference series of the season at Moravian. Saturday's two, seven-inning game doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Greyhounds' Gillespie Field, while Sunday's series-finale is set for 12-noon.
