Baseball Defeats Mount St. Vincent, 9-8, In Eight In Back-And-Forth Affair

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 1, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy finally played its home-opener on Wednesday, defeating non-conference foe the College of Mount St. Vincent, 9-8, in eight innings at Lower Roosevelt Field. The game was called in the top of the ninth inning due to darkness. The Mariners improve to 8-7 overall on the year, while the Dolphins fall to 4-11.

Freshman Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) was 2-for-2 with three walks, one RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Classmate Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Jake Wood (Richmond, Va.) had two hits and an RBI and junior Quinn Fleming (Ashburn, Va.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) had a hit, a run and three stolen bases, while junior Grant Foley (Butler, Pa.) had a hit, a walk, got plunked three times, stole a base and scored three runs.

On the mound, junior Brad Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio) earned the victory after pitching 1.1 innings and allowed no runs, just two hits and struck out two. Junior Zack De St. Germain (Eagle, Idaho) picked up the save, pitching 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning. Sophomore Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) got the start and lasted five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and striking out three.

The Mariners return to action on Thursday with another non-conference tilt, this against John Jay College of the CUNYAC Conference. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m. at Lower Roosevelt Field.
