Purchase, NY – The Merchant Marine baseball team racked up a pair of come from behind wins Saturday afternoon to sweep a double header at Purchase State.  The Mariners got strong performances on the mound from Timothy Arner (Allentown, PA), Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, NC), and Cameron Stadele (Alpharetta, GA).  Arner and Morgan both went at least five innings to start the game while Stadele earned a pair of saves on the afternoon.

Purchase State (2-2) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game with two hits as well as one USMMA error.  The Mariners answered with one run in the top of the second as Jacob Wood (Richmond, VA) posted a RBI single.  The Panthers pushed their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second, where the margin would remain until the fifth inning.

Merchant Marine (7-2) scratched out one run in the fifth with a Warren Hartmann (Wyckoff, NJ) double followed by a Danny Collins (Sleepy Hollow, NY) RBI single.  USMMA tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning with a first-and-third running play that accounted for a tally after an errant throw by the Panthers' third baseman.

Arner finished six strong innings of work, allowing just two earned runs, and would eventually move his 2014 record to a perfect 3-0.  The Mariners grabbed their first lead of the day in the seventh inning with a RBI double from Hartmann as Tyler Alger (Fairfax, VA) scored from first after being hit by a pitch.  Jake Martin (San Diego, CA) supplied an insurance run to make it 5-3 heading into the final frame.  Stadele kept the Panthers scoreless to secure the save and the USMMA victory.

Purchase State grabbed the early lead in the second game with a solo homerun in the bottom of the third.  Hartmann answered for USMMA with a solo shot of his own in the fourth, his third long ball of the year.  However, the home side would scratch out a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to build a 3-1 advantage.

The Mariners cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning after a wild pitch allowed a run to come home.  USMMA would score three times in the top of the seventh with the benefit of only one hit.  The Mariners put pressure on the Panthers defense with their speed as Andrew MacKinnon (Buffalo, NY) had the only hit of the inning with Hartmann posting the only RBI.

Morgan's five innings on the mound included six strike outs and three earned runs.  Brad Suciu (Zanesville, OH) earned his first victory of the season with a 1-2-3 sixth inning.  Stadele did not allow a hit in the bottom of the seventh as Merchant Marine completed the Saturday afternoon sweep.

The USMMA baseball team returns to action Tuesday night against Baruch in Patchogue, NY at the home of St. Joseph's (LI).
