William Paterson Upends Merchant Marine in Non-Conference Tilt

Wayne, NJ – The USMMA baseball team suffered an 11-3 defeat at the hands of William Paterson Wednesday afternoon.  Nicholas Kopacka (Saugus, CA) provided a RBI sacrifice fly in the top of third as the Mariners closed an early deficit, eventually tying the game.  Ben Tracy (Doylestown, PA) tossed a scoreless inning of relief as the freshman made his second collegiate appearance.

William Paterson (4-1) plated the first two runs in the game in the bottom of the second inning on a pair of RBI singles.  The Mariners got on the board first with Kopacka's sac fly to bring home Nicholas Dimas (Keller, TX), who start the frame with a walk.  USMMA capitalized on a throwing error later in the inning to allow Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, NY) to scamper home with the tying run.  However, the home team was able to push across two more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Merchant Marine (2-4) got its third run of the contest on a wild pitch as Jacob Wood (Richmond, VA) scored from third.  The Pioneers would respond with seven unanswered runs while also taking advantage of four USMMA errors.

Andrew MacKinnon (Buffalo, NY) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Mariners and is now hitting .381 on the season.

The USMMA baseball team returns to action this weekend for a Landmark Conference series against Susquehanna.
