Jack D. Noonan ’78 is the third Kings Pointer to receive the George Edward “Skip” Prosser ’72 Achievement Award. Jack’s undying love and never-ending sacrifices for Kings Point and Kings Point Athletics are a true testament to his unselfishness. Jack epitomizes the very best of Skip Prosser and possesses his passion to serve others in need.
Whether it’s walking the sidelines of countless games at Kings Point or making one generous contribution after another to the Department, Jack’s focus is to ensure that the midshipmen have the necessary resources to succeed and have a wonderful experience in the process.
His approach, which usually comes in a humorous form, is always with a smile and never without enthusiasm. Most recently, Jack donated $3,528 to the football program for the team’s dramatic, come-from-behind win over arch-rival Coast Guard. The twist? The amount represented the game’s final score; KP35, CG28. Last fall, Jack, who is currently the Chief Executive Officer for BLT Chembulk Group, was so quick to authorize a national sponsorship proposal for the Heidmar Blue and Gray Golf Classics, that he said yes to an increase in funds before knowing the actual amount. His response, “whatever we can do for the midshipmen and the tour.”
It’s moment’s like these that you feel honored to have shared a conversation or experience with Jack. Just like Skip Prosser, Jack’s love for Kings Point goes beyond sponsorships or donations. It stems from a work ethic and desire to see others succeed.
Jack graduated from the Academy in 1978, earning a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, with a concentration in Marine Petroleum Operations, and a U.S. Coast Guard License as 3rd Mate. Additionally, he was commissioned as Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve, ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant. For the ensuing six years, he sailed with the U.S. Flag Tanker Fleet of Texaco, advancing his License to Chief Mate (1st Officer).
In 1984, Jack joined the Operations Department at chemical tanker owner Stolt-Nielsen in Greenwich, CT. Within one year, he was transferred into the Sales & Marketing Department as Shipbroker. Jack spent the next ten years in Stolt-Nielsen’s Indian Ocean Service, ultimately holding the position of Sales Manager. Jack left Stolt-Nielsen in 1995 to join Sound Tanker Chartering, a ship brokerage firm specializing in the chemical tanker sector. At Sound Tanker, Jack transacted business with virtually every ship owner/operator in the sector, on every major worldwide trade lane and his transactions with major cargo shippers included such companies as ExxonMobil, BP, Amoco, ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco and Dow, as well as numerous lesser known cargo shippers that include commodity trading and brokerage companies.
In 2003, Jack was named Vice President of Clipper Group’s Copenhagen Tankers (subsequently known as Clipper Tankers USA and now as Nordic Tankers USA.) There he directed significant commercial expansion that culminated with the September 2006 announcement of his promotion to President, a position Jack held until he joined Chembulk Tankers as Chief Operating Officer in April 2007. In December 2007, after the sale of Chembulk from its private equity group ownership to Berlian Laju Tankers (BLT) of Indonesia, Jack was promoted to President of Chembulk Tankers. One of his first orders of business was to christen the company’s recent newbuilding, the MT Chembulk Kings Point, delivered in March 2008.
In November 2010, Berlian Laju Tankers consolidated the commercial operations of its four chemical tanker business units, including Chembulk Tankers, into the BLT Chembulk Group and appointed Jack as Chief Executive Officer.
Presently BLT Chembulk Group operates a fleet of 62 modern chemical tankers. It is headquartered in Southport, CT and has offices in Brazil, China, Denmark, Dubai, Hong Kong, Houston, Indonesia, Korea and Singapore.
