Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split Against Mount St. Mary At Home

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 1, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team split their home Skyline Conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary on Friday evening at Bartoszek Field, dropping the first game 3-0 and winning the second game 4-3. The Mariners posted their fifth straight 20-win season, improving to 20-13 (12-6 Skyline) while the Knights dropped to 14-24 (8-12 Skyline).

Game 1 Highlights

  • Mount St. Mary struck first in the second inning with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Knights added to their advantage in the fifth inning with another RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Mount St. Mary tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning on an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0, which held as the final.
  • Senior Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) recorded the Mariners' only hit of the contest.
  • Freshman Baxter Hamilton (Sugar Land, Texas) went five innings, allowing two runs while striking out three batters.
  • Sophomore Travis Campbell (Alba, Texas) allowed one run and struck out two in relief.
  • Michael Pisseri earned the complete-game shutout victory for the Knights, tossing seven innings, allowing one hit, and striking out five batters.

Game 2 Highlights

  • Mount St. Mary struck first in the second inning, plating two runs on an RBI single and a passed ball to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Mariners answered in the bottom of the second as freshman Axel Prechel (Corvallis, Ore.) delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Merchant Marine took the lead in the fourth inning with a three-run rally. Freshman Jason Brown (Marlton, N.J.) started the inning with an RBI triple to tie the game at two, followed by an RBI single from freshman Drew Davis (Springboro, Ohio) and an RBI double from freshman Davin Fulton (Houston, Texas) to give the Blue and Gray a 4-2 advantage.
  • The Knights cut into the deficit in the fifth inning with an RBI double to make it 4-3, but the Mariners held on to secure the victory.
  • The Blue and Gray had three players register multi-hit games as junior Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.), Brown, and Cahalan each recorded two hits. Junior Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.), Davis, and Fulton each added a hit.
  • Cahalan scored a team-high two runs, while Brown and Davis each crossed the plate once.
  • Brown, Davis, Fulton, and Prechel each recorded an RBI.
  • Brown and Davis each registered a stolen base.
  • The KP pitching staff recorded a season-best 13 strikeouts. Senior Eddie Lippert (Deer Park, N.Y.) earned his third win of the season, going five innings, allowing three runs, and striking out four. The bullpen was dominant, allowing no runs over the final four innings. Freshman Levi Reale (Woodbridge, Va.) tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout, while sophomores Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) and Travis Campbell (Alba, Texas) combined for scoreless innings with Inserra striking out two and Campbell fanning three. Senior Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) secured his 23rd career save with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out three batters.
