Prior to kickoff, Merchant Marine honored its nine-member senior class of Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.), Cruz McDermott (Palatine, Ill.), Noe Macias (Lansing, Mich.), Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas), Michael Doshan (Mound, Minn.), Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.), Brady Dillon (Westminster, Md.), Quentin Lueck (Bakersfield, Calif.) and James Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) as part of the Senior Day festivities.

Merchant Marine generated the first scoring opportunity of the afternoon in the 21st minute when junior Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) had his shot attempt turned away by Old Westbury goalkeeper Paul DeGennaro. The Mariners broke through in the 28th minute when junior Cal Lutz (South Pasadena, Calif.) found the back of the net off a beautiful throughball feed from junior Robert Derwin (East Meadow, N.Y.) to give the Blue and Gray a 1-0 advantage. Merchant Marine continued to apply pressure following the opening goal. Robertson had another opportunity denied by DeGennaro before Jung put a right-footed rocket on goal, which the Panthers' goalkeeper also stopped, as the Mariners carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Old Westbury nearly found the equalizer in the 69th minute when Jeffrey Baires's shot struck the crossbar. The hosts took control after with a pair of chances as Robertson sent a shot just wide of the left post in the 73rd minute off a feed from sophomore Ethan Schuette (Gig Harbor, Wash.), then McDermott headed an attempt off the crossbar in the 74th minute. The Blue and Gray finally added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Jung bent a right-footed corner kick into the box, and Lutz finished with a header into the back of the net, extending USMMA's advantage to 2-0, which they held for the win.

The Mariners controlled the offensive numbers throughout the contest, outshooting Old Westbury 18-4 while also holding a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Castoro picked up the win for Merchant Marine and racked up a combined shutout with Howell as USMMA registered its fifth straight clean sheet. Howell made one stop for the Mariners while Paul DeGennaro took the loss and made seven stops for the Panthers.

The Mariners return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they host Mount St. Mary in Skyline Conference action at 7 p.m. at Raymond J. Bartoszek Field.
