Mariners Rally Past Mount St. Vincent For Four-Set Skyline Win

BRONX, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2026) – After dropping the opening set, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team responded by winning three straight to earn a 3-1 Skyline Conference victory over Mount St. Vincent on Saturday morning at the Peter Jay Sharp Center. The Mariners prevailed 18-25, 25-17, 26-24 and 25-10 to improve to 17-2 overall and remain perfect in conference play at 8-0. The Dolphins fell to 5-12 (2-4 Skyline).

Match File Freshman Anna Kelly (Orange, Texas) led the Mariners with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .290 and adding seven digs. Junior Sydney Douglas (Herndon, Va.) was right behind with 14 kills on a .423 hitting percentage, committing just three errors on 26 swings.

Freshman Miranda Zeng (Cupertino, Calif.) handed out a match-high 52 assists and added four service aces, while sophomore Carly Soboloski (Peoria, Ariz.) finished with seven kills on just 10 swings with one error for a .600 hitting percentage. Freshman Sophie Phillips (Huffman, Texas) also recorded seven kills, hit .375 and was in on three blocks. Freshman Candy Saz-Price (Cabot, Ark.) added five kills on a .364 clip.

Mount St. Vincent controlled much of the opening set. The Dolphins created separation in the middle stages and eventually built a 24-17 advantage before closing out the 25-18 victory.

The Mariners responded immediately in the second. USMMA jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind kills from Douglas, senior Erin Stillinger (Keller, Texas) and Phillips, and continued to build from there. Merchant Marine eventually stretched the advantage to 10-3 and maintained control throughout the remainder of the set. Douglas put down the final two points to finish off the 25-17 win and even the match at one set apiece.

USMMA carried that momentum into the third and raced out to a 4-0 advantage, but Mount St. Vincent refused to go away. The Mariners eventually found themselves holding a 24-22 lead before the Dolphins scored two straight to tie the set at 24-24. Phillips answered with a kill to put USMMA back in front, and Kelly followed with the set-clinching kill for the 26-24 victory and a 2-1 match lead.

The Mariners left no doubt in the fourth. After the teams were tied at 2-2, USMMA took control and quickly opened up a 10-3 advantage. Merchant Marine continued to pour it on from there, hitting a blistering .538 in the set with 16 kills against just two errors. The Mariners cruised to the 25-10 win to complete the four-set victory.

USMMA finished with 57 kills and hit .328 as a team, including .370 in the second set and .538 in the fourth. The Mariners also served 11 aces. Mount St. Vincent was led by Anna Nolasco and Alysa Padgett with nine kills apiece, while Padgett also finished with seven service aces.

Up next, the Mariners will hit the road for a showdown against the only other unbeaten team in Skyline Conference play, Sarah Lawrence, on Wednesday night, Oct. 21. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Gryphons' Campbell Sports Center.
