NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Aug. 29, 2025) – The USMMA women's soccer team opened the 2025 season with a 3-0 loss at nationally ranked #3 Christopher Newport at Captains Field on Friday night. Sophomore keeper Eva Fields (Williamsburg, Va.) made an impressive 17 saves on the night.

Merchant Marine generated three shots on goal over the 90 minutes, with attempts from freshman Sakura Lopez (San Diego, Calif.), junior Alexx Forman (Cincinnati, Ohio), and sophomore Jayme Santasiero (Houston, Texas).
 
Christopher Newport struck first in the 23rd minute on a goal by Alex Devers. Hanna Heaton doubled the Captains' lead fifteen seconds into the second half and Grace Shifflett added the final goal in the 65th minute on a long-range strike over Fields.
 
Up next, the Mariners will stay Old Dominion State to face Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Marlins' Foster Field at Tassos Paphites Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach, Va.
