FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (May 3, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team recorded a doubleheader sweep of Skyline foe Farmingdale State. The Mariners picked up a 6-4 victory in the opener before adding an 11-4 win in game two. USMMA improved to 24-13 (14-4 Skyline), while Farmingdale Stat fell to 19-13 (12-6 Skyline).

Game 1
A four-run sixth helped the Mariners record a 6-4 victory in the opener. Sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run, while senior
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and sophomore
Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman
Cody White (San Diego, Calif.) allowed four runs, one earned, in 5.1 innings for the win.

USMMA broke through for the game's first run in the third after senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) set the table with a one-out double. Sophomore
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) then walked and Chiappetti loaded the bases with a single before senior
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) made it a 1-0 game with a sacrifice fly.

The Mariners added a run in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Freshman
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) worked a leadoff walk and stole second before Olivares roped an RBI double into right field.

Farmingdale State then manufactured a run to get on the board in the fifth. A leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt quickly gave the Rams a runner on third before a sacrifice fly made it 2-1.

USMMA answered with a two-out rally that led to four runs in the sixth. The first two batters were retired before freshman
Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) kept the inning alive with a single. After Millen worked a walk, Troutt was plunked to load the bases and Chiappetti grounded a two-run single through the left side. Clapsaddle was then plunked before Heck made it a 6-1 ballgame with a two-run single.

The Rams took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the sixth and plated three runs to cut the USMMA lead to 6-4.

Junior
Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, but retired the next three batters to end the game and record the save.

Game 2
The Mariners jumped out an 8-1 after five innings and went on to complete the sweep with an 11-4 victory in game two. Clapsaddle finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three RBI and two runs scored to lead USMMA. Sophomore
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, and Heck finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Senior
Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) had six strikeouts and allowed four runs in 7.0 innings of work for the win.

USMMA quickly took the lead with two runs in the top of the first. Troutt started things with a one-out single and Chiappetti worked a walk before Heck made it 2-0 with a two-out, two-run double.

Syversen worked a 1-2-3 first and added a 1-2-3 second, eventually retiring seven-straight to start the game before issuing a one-out walk in the third.

The Mariners used the long ball to tack on three more runs in the fourth. After Olivares worked a one-out walk, Gamez launched a two-run homer to center. Millen later kept the inning going with a two-out triple, but was able to score on an error as USMMA extended its lead to 5-0.

USMMA had only one hit in the fifth, but tacked on three more runs. Chiappetti was plunked to lead off the inning before Clapsaddle roped an RBI triple to right center. Heck was then plunked and Kruer walked to load the bases with no outs. Gamez later drew a one-out walk to force in a run and Vazquez made it 8-0 with an RBI fielder's choice.

Farmingdale State got on the board with a run in the fifth, despite not recording a hit. A leadoff walk started things before a wild pitch and a groundout left the Rams with a runner on third and one out. An RBI groundout then made it an 8-1 ballgame.

The Rams then rallied for three two-out runs in the seventh. After a leadoff single and a one-out walk, a two-out RBI single and a two-run double brought the score to 8-4.

The Mariners used the long ball to tack on two more runs in the eighth for a 10-4 lead. Troutt set the table with a one-out walk before Clapsaddle launched a two-run homer to left center.

USMMA added one more run in the ninth as junior
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) collected a two-out RBI single for the final 11-4 margin.
