KINGS POINT, N.Y. (May 11, 2025) – Needing just one win to claim the Skyline Championship, the top-seeded U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team opened the day with a 6-1 loss to third-seeded Farmingdale State and was then defeated, 2-1, in the winner-take-all second game of the day. USMMA closed out the season with a 28-15 record, while Farmingdale State improved to 26-14.

Senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead USMMA, which was held to just five hits. Sophomore
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) was 1-for-4 and senior
Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) finished 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) allowed five runs, four earned, in 7.0 innings of work.

The Rams stranded five runners across the first two frames before breaking into the scoring column with a run in the third. After loading the bases with one out, a squeeze bunt gave the Rams a 1-0 lead.

USMMA, meanwhile, was held without a hit until a one-out double by Millen in the third.

Farmingdale State tacked on two more runs in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. A leadoff single, a stolen base and an intentional walk set the table for a one-out RBI single and an RBI groundout.

Millen led off the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a groundout, but was stranded as the next two batters were retired.

The Rams extended their lead in the seventh after adding a pair of two-out runs. A one-out single was followed by a two-out single, but an error in the outfield allowed a run to score. An infield single kept the rally going before an RBI single made it a 5-0 game.

A two-out double in the eighth set the table for an RBI single as the Rams took a 6-0 lead.

The Mariners threatened in the bottom of the frame, but stranded a pair of runners. The first two batters were retired before Millen kept the inning alive with a double to right center. After Troutt singled to set up runners on the corners, a foulout ended the inning.

USMMA broke into the scoring column with an unearned run in the ninth. Heck doubled with one out and took third on a groundout. Junior
Charles Cahalan (Overland Park, Kan.) then walked before sophomore
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) reached on an error that allowed Heck to score as the Mariners made it 6-1.

Troutt and freshman
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) each went 1-for-3 with a walk, while Millen scored one run, as the USMMA offense was held to just four hits. Chiappetti and sophomore
Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) were both 1-for-4. Junior
Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) struck out seven and allowed two runs in 8.0 innings of work.

The Mariners went down in order in the top of the first before the Rams grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. A one-out single and a stolen base set the table for a two-out RBI single.

USMMA tried to answer immediately in the second, but stranded a pair. Kruer drew a two-out walk and stole second before an Olivares single set up runners on the corners. A flyout, however, ended the inning.

Felton worked a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the second before USMMA left the bases loaded in the third. A two-out walk to Troutt kept the inning alive before Chiappetti singled and senior
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) reached on an error to load the bases. An inning-ending popout followed as the Mariners were kept off the board.

After another 1-2-3 inning for Felton in the fourth, USMMA leveled the score at 1-1 in the fifth. Millen started things with a one-out walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Chiappetti then reached on an error that allowed Millen to score the game-tying run.

Felton worked around a leadoff single in the sixth and a one-out double in the seventh, but surrendered the go-ahead run in the eighth. A two-out triple was followed by a pinch-hit RBI single as the Rams took a 2-1 lead.

The Mariners were retired in order in the ninth to end the game.
