GLASSBORO, N.J. (May 10, 2025) – The USMMA women's lacrosse season came to an end on Saturday afternoon when the Mariners fell to Western Connecticut State, 15-11, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament down at Rowan University. Merchant Marine finishes the year with a 13-3 record, while the Wolves improve to 17-2 and move on to face the hosts, the #23 Profs in the second round on Sunday.

Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) and freshman
Reese Ripley (Denver, Colo.) both tallied four goals apiece. Freshmen
Amber Fields (St. Augustine, Fla.) and
Lana Hayes (Toms River, N.J.) also found the back of the net with Fields scoring twice and Hayes once.

Ripley led all players in the game with six draw controls, while also tying for the team-best with fellow freshman
Juliet Trouse (Riverdale, N.J.) with two caused turnovers. Junior goalie
Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) recorded a game-high five ground balls and made six saves between the pipes.

After WestConn opened the scoring just over a minute into the action, Ripley answered with back-to-back goals to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead just at 11:04. The Wolves finished the first quarter with four-straight to take a 5-2 advantage into the quick break.

USMMA scored four of the first five goals to start the second quarter to tie the game up at 6-6 with Fields bookending two by Jablonowski. However, WestConn closed out another quarter strong, tallying four-consecutive goals yet again and led 10-6 at halftime.

Ripley and Jablonowski went back-to-back early in the third to cut the deficit to two before the teams quickly traded goals just 23 seconds apart. The Wolves tallied a man-down goal with just one second left in the quarter to take a 12-9 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

Neither team scored until after the midway point of the fourth, but it was WestConn who buried two goals in a minute and 14 seconds to build a five-goal cushion. The Mariners answered with two-straight, but they both came with under two minutes remaining before the Wolves closed out the scoring with a tally with just seven seconds left.

WestConn was led by junior Madison Ratchford who had a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists. Senior Savannah Kom added five points with two goals and three helpers and three other Wolves recorded multi-point efforts. Sophomore Isabella Pota secured a team-best five draw controls, while Kom led all players on the afternoon with three caused turnovers. Senior goalie Molly Bresnahan picked up five ground balls and made an impressive 12 saves to earn the victory.
