Mariners Defeated At Home By CCNY, 13-5

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 9, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team held a 5-4 lead through three innings, but stranded eight runners over the next six frames and never scored again in a 13-5 home loss to CCNY. USMMA fell to 13-10, while CCNY improved to 4-6.

Game Link Senior Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to pace USMMA, while sophomore Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) and classmate Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) each went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The Mariners took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) set the table with a one-out triple and Chiappetti followed with a sacrifice fly.

CCNY promptly responded by sending eight men to the plate as part of a three-run second that put the Beavers up, 3-1.

USMMA used the long ball to pull even in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) worked a two-out walk to keep the inning alive before Heck tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run blast to left field.

After CCNY took advantage of a two-out error to grab a 4-3 lead with an unearned run in the third, the Mariners took the lead right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Chiappetti started things with a one-out double and senior Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) walked before a flyout gave USMMA runners on second and third with two outs. A wild pitch brought home the tying run and Gamez put the Mariners back on top, 5-4, with an RBI double.

CCNY retook the lead in the sixth after an error and two walks set the stage for a two-out grand slam that put the Beavers back on top, 8-5.

The Beavers extended their lead in the eighth with a two-run double and loaded the bases with one out as part of a three-run ninth for the final 13-5 margin.

The Mariners travel up to Newburgh, N.Y., on Saturday, April 12, for a noon doubleheader.
