Baseball Swept In Doubleheader Against St. Joseph’s-Long Island

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 25, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team was swept by St. Joseph's-Long Island in a Skyline doubleheader at Bartoszek Field. The Mariners allowed six runs in the first inning of a 15-4 loss in game one before stranding seven runners in a 2-0 loss in game two. USMMA fell to 20-13 (10-4 Skyline), while SJLI improved to 20-13 (10-4 Skyline).

Game Links Game 1
The Mariners were unable to come back from a six-run, first-inning deficit and fell in the opener by a score of a 15-4. Senior Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while sophomore Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) finished 2-for-4 with two runs and freshman Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

St. Joseph's-Long Island set the tone with a six-run first. After three-straight singles loaded the bases with no outs, junior Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) responded by retiring the next two batters. A walk, however, forced in a run before a two-run double and a three-run homer quickly gave the Golden Eagles a 6-0 lead.

SJLI then made it a 7-0 game in the second as a leadoff triple was followed by an RBI single.

After Felton worked a quick 1-2-3 fourth, the USMMA offense got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Chiappetti and senior Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) set the table with back-to-back one-out singles and Heck made it a 7-1 ballgame with an RBI single up the middle. Sophomore Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) then loaded the bases with a two-out walk, but a strikeout ended the inning.

The Golden Eagles went up, 10-1, with a three-run fifth before the Mariners responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Senior Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) started things with a one-out single and Chiappetti added a two-out single before Clapsaddle worked a walk to load the bases. Heck followed with a two-run single to center and Kruer made it 10-4 with an RBI single up the middle.

St. Joseph's-Long Island tacked on five more runs in the sixth for the final 15-4 margin.

Game 2
USMMA allowed just six hits in game two, but were held to five of their own and also stranded seven runners in a 2-0 loss. Freshman Cody White (San Diego, Calif.) worked into the ninth and racked up 10 strikeouts in 8.0 innings of two-run ball, but was saddled with the loss. Kruer finished 2-for-4 with a double, while sophomore Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) and Olivares each went 1-for-4 with a double.

USMMA had a chance to push across a run in the first, but a one-out double by Troutt was followed by consecutive strikeouts.

White worked a 1-2-3 second and added a 1-2-3 third, eventually retiring nine-straight before issuing a one-out walk in the fourth.

The Golden Eagles, however, broke through with a run in the fifth. A leadoff single set the table before an errant pickoff attempt allowed the runner to reach third. A sacrifice fly followed and it was a 1-0 game.

USMMA tried to respond in the bottom of the frame as Kruer led off with a single and stole second, but a pair of strikeouts and a caught stealing ended the inning.

White struck out the side in a 1-2-3 sixth and stranded runners on second and third with an inning-ending strikeout in the seventh.

The Mariners stranded two more runners in the eighth. Olivares doubled to lead off the inning and freshman Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) was plunked with one out, but a popout and a flyout ended the inning.

A leadoff walk in the ninth chased White from the game as the Golden Eagles added an insurance run. After a sacrifice bunt and a single gave the Golden Eagles runners on the corners with one out, a sacrifice fly made it 2-0.

USMMA made things interesting in the ninth, but ultimately stranded two more runners. Chiappetti worked a leadoff walk and Kruer kept the game alive with a two-out double that set up runners on second and third, but a groundout ended the game.

The Mariners host Mount Saint Vincent for a Skyline doubleheader on Sunday, April 27, at noon.
