Baseball Splits Skyline DH With Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 15, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team split their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with Skyline foe Mount Saint Mary. After the Knights took Game 1 by a score of 8-7, the Mariners bounced back and won 19-8 in Game 2. With the split, Merchant Marine left Newburgh with a record of 16-11 (8-2 Skyline), while Mount Saint Mary exited the diamond with a record of 16-13-1 (10-4 Skyline).

Game Links Kings Point was led in Game 1 by freshman Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.), sophomore Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.), and senior Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.). The trio recorded two RBI each to keep the Mariners' offense rolling after their Sunday doubleheader sweep in Purchase. Kruer finished a single shy of the cycle by notching a double, RBI triple, and a solo home run, which at the time gave Kings Point a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning.

On the mound, sophomore David Cherwonuk (Chattanooga, Tenn.) tossed four innings and struck out a season-high seven batters while allowing three runs against the potent Knights offense.

After their tough loss in Game 1, the Mariners came back swinging in Game 2 by scoring a season-high 19 runs on 16 hits. Led by one of their hottest hitters, senior Danny Heck (Massillon, Ohio), who had a career-high four-hit and four-RBI game, Kings Point secured a split of the Skyline twin bill. All four of Heck's hits produced runs. A two-run single in the first got USMMA off to a quick start before Heck added on an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI double in the sixth. Heck now has 12 RBI on the season, extending his career high for a season.

Gamez also added his second multi-RBI game of the twin bill with two RBI, while sophomore Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) also drove in two runs in Game 2.

Senior Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) was resilient on the hill this afternoon for Merchant Marine. After allowing eight runs over the first two innings, Syversen shut out the Knights in the final five innings in the Mariners' mercy rule win in seven innings. Over the last five frames, Syversen allowed only three hits to finish the seven-inning complete game.

Up next, the Mariners conclude their Skyline road trip with a doubleheader in Old Westbury on Thursday, April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
