Tennis Celebrates Senior Day With 7-0 Shutout Win Over Sarah Lawrence

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 13, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's tennis team won its Senior Day match against Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence, 7-0, on Sunday at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The victory improved the Mariners' record to 3-3 (3-1 Skyline), while the Gryphons fell to 2-4 (0-3 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Match Link The Mariners honored their four graduating seniors, Wesley Cooke (Mobile, Ala.), Garrett Hall (Collierville, Tenn.) and captains Connor McQuade (Jacksonville, Fla.) and RJ Novak (Yorktown, Va.) before the match with a special Senior Day ceremony on nearby Tomb Field.
 
When the tennis action got started it was the #3 doubles team of Cooke and Hall that finished first with a 6-1 victory, followed by the sophomore duo of Brent Mathews (Falls Church, Va.) and Josh Staroselskiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) capturing a 6-2 win at #2 to clinch the doubles point. McQuade and Novak finished of the doubles sweep with an 8-3 triumph at the top flight.
 
Sophomore Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) at #5 singles and Novak at #2 finished off their opponents quickly with 6-0, 6-0 shutouts to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead. Freshman Fredrich Buquel (Mission, Texas) won his matchup at #3, 6-1, 6-0 to put the Mariners on the verge of the team victory. It was Hall at #6 who clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
 
Mathews earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at #1 and McQuade recorded a comeback victory at #4, dropping the first set 7-6 (7-2 in the tie-breaker) before rallying to take a 6-2 second-set win and then winning the match tie-breaking third set, 10-1, to complete the shutout.
 
Up next, Merchant Marine will travel up to Newburgh, N.Y., this Tuesday, April 15, to take on Mount St. Mary. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
