PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (March 29, 2024) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's tennis team defeated St. Joseph's-Long Island, 7-0, on Saturday in the Skyline Conference-opener for the Mariners. The victory improves KP to 1-1 (1-0 Skyline) on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-6 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat.

USMMA swept the doubles competition to earn the first point of the afternoon, as all three flights won by the exact same scores of 6-2 – seniors
RJ Novak (Yorktown, Va.) and
Connor McQuade (Jacksonville, Fla.) at #1, freshmen
Fredrich Buquel (Mission, Texas) and
Aaron Zhao (Temple City, Calif.) at #2 and sophomores
Lena Lewis (Williamsburg, Va.) and
Patrick Novotny (Fort Worth, Texas) at #3.
In singles action, Novotny claimed the first point at #5 when his opponent retired in the second set after the sophomore won set #1 by a score of 6-1. Novak was not far behind with a shutout 6-0, 6-0 triumph at #2. Buquel's 6-1, 6-0 victory at #4 clinched the match for the Mariners.
Finishing out the shutout for Merchant Marine was freshman
Clay Wilson (Fort Mill, S.C.) with a win at #6 (6-1, 6-2), Zhao at #3 (6-3, 6-3) and McQuade at #1 (6-3, 6-2).
Up next, USMMA will travel up to Manhattanville this Tuesday, April 1, for a date with the Valiants. That match will begin at 4 p.m at the Manhattanville Tennis Courts.
