NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 25, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team allowed eight unearned runs and fell on the road to Coast Guard, 10-3, on Tuesday. The Mariners dropped to 6-8, while the Bears improved to 8-6.

Freshman's
Luke Kruer (Sellersburg, Ind.) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run to pace the Mariners. Junior
Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) allowed seven runs, one earned, in 3.0 innings of work to take the loss.

USMMA threatened in the first after freshman
Braden Vazquez (Missouri City, Texas) and sophomore
Tommy Chiappetti (Buckeye, Ariz.) put together back-to-back one-out singles, but the next two batters struck out to end the inning.

Coast Guard then went up 2-0 in the bottom of the frame on a one-out RBI double and a two-out error.

The Mariners pushed a run across in the third after Millen started things with a one-out single. Millen promptly stole second and took third on an error before scoring on a passed ball as USMMA pulled to within 2-1.

The Bears broke open the game with a five-run third frame. An error helped the first two runs score before Coast Guard added a two-out RBI single and a two-run double to go up 7-1.

USMMA overcame a double play to add a run in the fifth. Kruer and freshman
Louis Inserra (Coplay, Pa.) opened the inning with consecutive singles, but a 6-4-3 double play left the Mariners with a runner on third and two outs. Millen followed with an RBI single that made it a 7-2 ballgame.

Coast Guard took advantage of another two-out error as part of a three-run eighth that made it 10-2.

The Mariners scored once more in the ninth, but also left the bases loaded. After sophomore
Christian Gamez (Kent Island, Md.) doubled with one out, sophomore
Landon Troutt (Fairfield, Calif.) was plunked and Kruer made it 10-3 with an RBI single up the middle. Sophomore
Ricardo Olivares (Flower Mound, Texas) then loaded the bases with a two-out single before a flyout ended the game.

The Mariners return home to host NJCU at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26.
