Women’s Lax Opens Season With 12-8 Home Loss To Coast Guard

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 2, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team lost its 2025 season-opener at home on Sunday to arch-rival Coast Guard, 12-8, at Brooks Stadium. The Mariners start the year 0-1, while the Bears improve to 2-0 with the victory.

Game Link Senior Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with five points as she scored twice and dished out three assists. Sophomore Grace Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa.) contributed four goals on the afternoon, which also tied for the game-high, while also leading all players with seven ground balls and matching the game-best with three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Leslie Wysong (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) found the back of the net once and recorded one assist, while senior Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) rounded out the Mariners' scorers with a second-quarter goal. In net, junior Karianna Eagle (Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) made eight saves in the losing effort.

Coast Guard scored the first two goals of the game before Jablonowski got USMMA on the board midway through the first quarter. The Bears would go on to score the next two goals, however, and then took a 5-2 lead into the break after 15 minutes.

CGA tallied four-straight goals over the first 11 minutes of the second half before the Mariners answered back with two more before halftime by Russo (assisted by Jablonowski) and Picozzi, and KP trailed 9-4 at the midway point of the game.

There were just two goals in the third quarter, the first by the Bears before Jablonowski scored her second of the day at 2:04 to make it 10-5. The Mariners finished strong, out-scoring CGA 3-2 in the final quarter with two tallies by Picozzi and Wysong's first of the season, but it wasn't enough, as the visitors escaped Brooks Stadium

Coast Guard held the edge in shots on the day, 29-16, including a 20-14 advantage in shots on goal. The visitors also won 14 draw controls to USMMA's seven, while also successfully clearing the ball 15-of-19 times and holding the Mariners to just 14-of-24 on clears.

The Bears were led by junior Abby McAllister, who tied Jablonowski for the game-high with five points on four goals and one assist. Three other players recorded multi-point efforts, as senior Laine Weber scored four goals, senior Caitlyn Coates had a goal and three helpers and junior Isabella Judge registered one tally and one assist. Senior goalie Maici Mintchwarner made six saves for the victory.

Up next, the Mariners host Clark University next Saturday, March 8, as the second game of a lacrosse doubleheader in Kings Point. Opening draw against the Cougars is scheduled for 3 p.m.
