NEW YORK (Feb. 22, 2025) – The USMMA men's and women's swimming & diving team sent a handful of swimmers to compete in the NYU Winter Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Violets' Palladium Athletic Facility in Manhattan. One academy record fell over the two-day event and a total of eight Mariners set new personal best times throughout the event.

Junior
Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) broke the Academy record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:00.58, which was a lifetime best for him by 13 seconds and beat out the old record by one second.

Jacob Socarras (Winter Springs, Fla.), senior
Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) and sophomore
Jason Equiano (Yonkers, N.Y.) all recorded multiple personal-best times on the weekend.

Mayer did so four more times – twice in the 200 butterfly during the prelims (1:50.99) and during a time trial (1:50.04) and once in both the 200 backstroke (1:49.50) and the 100 breaststroke (59.25).

Socarras shaved off a combined three seconds over two races of the 200 fly during the prelims (1:57.74) and the finals (1:56.99). He also set a new PR in the 100 fly (50.60).

DeCarlo earned two bests in the 100 breast during the prelims (1:02.05) and the finals (1:02.05) taking off a combined two seconds, while Equiano's two PRs came in the 100 fly (54.03) and the 100 freestyle (47.22).

The four other Mariners to set new personal-best times are listed below.Â
- Graduate student Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) in the 200 free (1:44.80)
- Sophomore Noel Park (Wayne, Pa.) in the 1650 free (17:41.10)
- Sophomore Luke Frank (Highland, Md.) in the 500 free (4:58.20)
- and on the women's side, freshman Rylie Larkin (Ponte Verda, Fla.) in the 100 back (1:10.03)Â
The "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team, went to Socarras.
The Mariners will send two divers – senior
Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) and junior
Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) – to the NCAA Regional Diving Championship Meet Friday-Saturday, Feb. 28-March 1 up at Springfield College, with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA National Championship Meet in mid-March. Live links to follow along with the two-day event are posted on
