Men’s Swimming & Diving Finishes Second At NJAC Championships Behind Eight NCAA Cuts, Five Academy Records And One Conference Record

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 16, 2025) – The USMMA men's swimming & diving team came in second place at the 2025 NJAC Championship Meet this weekend down at the Hampton Aquaplex in Virginia. The Mariners finished the meet with 1190 team points, behind only #10 TCNJ, who were the Conference Champions with 1714 points. Merchant Marine was ahead of #20 Salisbury, who came in third with 1181.5 points.

NCAA Cuts
  • Junior Thomas Cable (Litchfield, Ariz.) during the one-meter dive prelims (451.65), the three-meter dive prelims (466.75) and the three-meter dive finals (505.05, which was also a new NJAC conference record)
  • Grad. student Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) in the 100 butterfly (48.54) and the 100 freestyle (44.68)
  • Junior Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) in the 200 individual medley (1:50.22)
  • Sophomore Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.) in the 100 breaststroke (55.27)
  • And the 200 medley relay team of freshman Ryan McOsker (Fredericksburg, Va.), Dankert, senior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Scherrer during a time trial in 1:29.58. 
Academy Records
  • Scherrer set three new academy records – during the prelims of the 100 fly (48.90) and then again in the finals of the 100 fly (48.54), and during the 100 free (44.61) while leading off the 400 free relay
  • The 800 free relay team of junior Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.), freshman John Frank (Highland, Md.), Scherrer and sophomore Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) with a time of 6:45.77 (four seconds faster than the old record)
  • The 400 medley relay team of Mayer, Dankert, DeCarlo and Scherrer (3:18.82) 
Additionally, USMMA had 27 top-eight finishes. 
  • Cable won the three-meter dive on Sunday (505.05)
  • Scherrer came in second place in both the 100 fly (48.54) and the 100 free (44.68)
  • Mayer placed third in the 200 IM (1:50.22)
  • Senior Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) came in third in the one-meter dive (397.45)
  • McOsker placed third in the 100 backstroke (50.09)
  • Mayer came in third in the 200 back (1:50.37)
  • The 400 free relay team of Scherrer, Wachendorfer, Frank and McOsker placed third in 3:02.73
  • Dankert finished fourth in the 100 breast (55.27) and the 200 breast (2:01.81)
  • The 800 free relay team of Wachendorfer, Frank, Scherrer and Lester finished fourth in 6:45.77
  • Lester came in fourth in the 500 free (4:33.39)
  • Scherrer placed fourth in the 50 free (20.46)
  • Cable finished fourth in the one-meter dive (395.20)
  • The 400 medley relay team of Mayer, Dankert, DeCarlo and Scherrer came in fourth in 3:18.82
  • The 200 medley relay team of Mayer, Dankert, DeCarlo and Scherrer placed fourth in 1:29.76, with Scherrer recording the fastest 50 split ever at USMMA (19.75)
  • Mayer placed fourth in the 100 back (50.10)
  • Griffiths finished fourth in the three-meter dive (402.50)
  • Sophomore Charlie Williams (Vienna, Va.) came in fifth in both the one-meter dive (285.30) and the three-meter dive (285.55)
  • Wachendorfer placed fifth in the 200 free (1:41.25)
  • Lester finished fifth in the 1650 free (16:04.93)
  • DeCarlo came in sixth in both the 100 fly (49.69) and the 100 back (51.10)
  • The 200 free relay team of McOsker, Frank, freshman Max Fedorenko (Chicago, Ill.) and DeCarlo placed sixth in 1:24.56
  • Senior Michael Brent (Fort Myers, Fla.) finished seventh in both the one-meter dive (256.25) and the three-meter dive (242.10) 
The "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team, went to Scherrer, while Cable took home the honor for the divers.
 
Up next for the Mariners is the two-day NYU Winter Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22. Prelims will take place beginning at 10 a.m., while finals will be held at 5 p.m. on both days at the Palladium Athletic Facility on the campus of New York University in Manhattan.
