NEW YORK (Nov. 10, 2025) - The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team opened its 2025-26 season with a 72-68 road loss to Hunter College on Monday night at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Mariners fell to 0-1, while the Hawks improved to 2-0.

Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six blocks. Senior
Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) added 18 points, six rebounds and three assists. Junior
Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) also notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while also dishing out a team-high five assists. Freshman
Tatum Carney (Fairfax, Va.) contributed eight points and three assists off the bench.
USMMA built an early 24-17 lead after the first quarter behind scoring from Barton and Ramsden. The Mariners extended their advantage to double digits midway through the second before Hunter closed the half on a 6-0 run to make it 37-30 at the break.
The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter, with Ramsden's third three-pointer giving the Mariners a 56-53 lead heading into the fourth. USMMA went ahead 61-55 after a Barton three-point play early in the final period, but Hunter tied the score at 66-66 in the final two minutes and took the lead for good in the closing moments.
Hunter's Alexa Charles led all scorers, notching a triple-double with 33 points, 12 rebounds, 10 steals and five assists. Gianna Henriques added 10 points and five rebounds, while Kennedy DeRuy scored eight points for the Hawks.
USMMA will play its home-opener this Wednesday night, Nov. 12, when the Mariners host Baruch inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
